In assoc with CQAF and by arrangement with Neil O'Brien Entertainment Few musicians can call on the kind of life experiences Adam Ant has in reserve for his new album. Seventeen years in the making, Ant’s comeback LP tells the tale of a man who loved, lost everything, and learnt to live again.
It’s autobiographical, of course, but don’t expect an album that wallows in the heartache of a career that threatened to free-fall out of control as Ant’s well-publicised illness took hold.
This is Adam at his swaggering best - pouting, posturing and throwing punches at the world - from the lazy southern drawl of single ‘Cool Zombie’ to the 50s rock ‘n’ roll homage to rocker ‘Vince Taylor’.
It might be nearly two decades since his last foray into the world of recorded music, but Ant hasn’t lost any of his rebellious spirit. He still treads his own path while others cautiously follow the ‘industry route’, and it’s a path that led him to shun the major labels and give himself complete control over the release that would mobilise the a whole generation of Ant-fans once more. And it’s certainly not a conventional release.
Recorded for a vinyl release, ‘Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar…’ is specifically an album of two sides.
“I wanted people to be able to listen to the two sides of the album and sense a very real change in atmosphere,” says Ant. “The album actually stemmed from the writing of ‘Stand and Deliver’, my autobiography. It’s about me, about how I feel and how I see things. But it’s also about how other people saw me.
“There were times when other people were looking at me and saying ‘pull yourself together, man. We’re here for you.’ So it’s about them, too.”
‘Who’s A Goofy Bunny Then?’ deals with Adam’s upset over the loss of his long-time friend and former manager, Malcolm McLaren, and ‘Vivienne’s Tears’ is an ode to old pal Vivienne Westwood, who has been at Adam’s side since the beginning of his career.
The lengthy album title, too, is a nod to the way Adam feels his life has been transformed over the years, and the perceived perpetrators of some of the anger he feels.
“The Blueblack Hussar is that man you saw years ago, with the white stripes across his face and the Navy regalia. It’s him, but twenty years later. He’s learnt a lot, he’s grown up a lot, but it’s still that man. He’s evolved into the Blueblack Hussar.
But of course it’s Ant who’s a real one percenter; a man whose refusal to do what’s expected of him has earned him a reputation as one of the music world’s true innovators in a career that now spans three decades and - on the strength of his latest offering - there’s still plenty of life left in
