Alternately labelled as punk rock, math rock and punk jazz, it makes sense that No Means No cite The Ramones, Miles Davis and Venetian Snares amongst their influences. Punk, but with complex instrumentation; angular, angry rock, but with sketchy, melodic basslines; hardcore, but with light, tight spots of jazz drumming... No Means No's savage intelligence comes across not just in the black humour of their lyrics, but in their successful melee of musical influences.
Forming in 1979 when brothers Rob and John Wright began recording in their parents’ basement in Victoria, British Columbia, the duo initially produced Zeppelin-esque ‘rock band’ music, albeit with a politicised, intellectual bent, on their own label Wrong Records. They developed their hardcore punk edge after Andy Kerr (formerly of Infamous Scientists with John) joined in 1983 to provide guitar and vocals, producing their fourth and possibly most highly rated album Wrong in 1989.
When Kerr left in 1992, the brothers recruited Tom Holliston (Showbusiness Giants, The Hanson Brothers) and together they released Worldhood of the World (As Such), Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie and One on seminal punk label Alternative Tentacles. All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt was released in the UK in 2006 on Southern, and the trio are set to release a new EP this year.
